Engineering note: The worm tooth geometry can only work as intended if the shaft is located consistently by its bearings and housing. Journal diameter, shoulder position, runout and bearing span therefore matter to the gear mesh.

Selection media for the relevant worm or wheel family. Final production geometry is confirmed from the RFQ.

What changes mechanically

A compact design sometimes places bearings close to the worm, which saves space but can make tolerance stack-up more sensitive.

Small worm gearing is sensitive to the relationship between the two members. Module or nominal size is only one coordinate. The mating definition also includes starts, hand, ratio, center distance, tooth system, material pairing and the way both components are located by bearings or hubs.

How to select or specify it

On the drawing, distinguish functional bearing seats from non-critical turned diameters. Specify datum relationships and any required concentricity/runout checks.

For a useful technical review, add the operating conditions: input speed, expected output torque, duty cycle, reversing frequency, ambient temperature and lubrication method. These inputs help separate a geometry question from a material, wear or thermal question.

What to verify before release

If the worm is supplied as a shafted component, send the bearing part numbers or required fits when available.
