What changes mechanically<\/h2>\n

The reference ground shaft family uses SCM440 with induction-hardened, ground teeth, while the reference general-purpose steel family uses S45C with cut\/thread-rolled teeth and no hardening.<\/p>\n

Small worm gearing is sensitive to the relationship between the two members. Module or nominal size is only one coordinate. The mating definition also includes starts, hand, ratio, center distance, tooth system, material pairing and the way both components are located by bearings or hubs.<\/p>\n

How to select or specify it<\/h2>\n

Ground worms are a strong candidate when compact shafted geometry and tooth finish are important. Cut worms can be appropriate for practical mechanisms where the duty, noise, accuracy and cost targets do not justify the extra process.<\/p>\n

For a useful technical review, add the operating conditions: input speed, expected output torque, duty cycle, reversing frequency, ambient temperature and lubrication method. These inputs help separate a geometry question from a material, wear or thermal question.<\/p>\n

What to verify before release<\/h2>\n

Specify the required inspection result rather than simply asking for the \u201chighest precision.\u201d Runout, lead, tooth thickness, shaft journals, concentricity and mating backlash are all separate controls.<\/p>\n
