Engineering note: Center distance is the installed distance between the worm axis and wheel axis. In a replacement mechanism, it is one of the most important dimensions because the housing often fixes it.

"How
Selection media for the relevant worm or wheel family. Final production geometry is confirmed from the RFQ.

What changes mechanically

A correct center distance must be consistent with the tooth geometry of both members. A pair with the same nominal module can still be incompatible if other geometry differs.

Small worm gearing is sensitive to the relationship between the two members. Module or nominal size is only one coordinate. The mating definition also includes starts, hand, ratio, center distance, tooth system, material pairing and the way both components are located by bearings or hubs.

How to select or specify it

For new designs, include the proposed center distance and available envelope in the RFQ. For replacements, measure the housing or provide the original assembly drawing instead of estimating from loose parts.

For a useful technical review, add the operating conditions: input speed, expected output torque, duty cycle, reversing frequency, ambient temperature and lubrication method. These inputs help separate a geometry question from a material, wear or thermal question.

What to verify before release

If only samples are available, identify which surfaces are bearing datums. Wear on an old wheel or shaft can make direct measurement misleading.
